Composition of Coach Selection Committee
Sturgeon Lake Minor Hockey Association strives to make its coach selection process as fair, objective, well informed and inclusive as possible.
A Selection Committee is appointed and comprised of the core directors: Supervisor of U9 and below, Supervisor of U11 and up, Past President, 1st Vice president, 2nd
Vice president, OMHA Rep, Three County Rep, Referee in Chief, and Ice Convenor. Other executive members are allowed to attend but are not eligible to vote. Committee members are declared in conflict of interest where family members and relatives are involved, and in such cases will have no input to the coach selection decision and will be excluded from deliberations.
Coach Selection Process
Consensus-building procedure is used through the selection process. Voting takes place as necessary. Overall, there continues to be strong interest in being a volunteer coach, often times resulting in a greater number of applicants than there are teams available. With such interest comes the need to distinguish and make choices and there are many factors that enter into the decision-making process.
It is a time-consuming endeavour with the committee spending as much time as necessary to discuss which candidates are the most qualified, capable, or in the best interest of the association for a particular team.
Specific situations may arise that require changes to the current policies to allow a coach to be selected. This will be reviewed on a case by case basis and will be communicated to any coaches involved.
All coaches must re-apply for coaching positions for every season.
Applicants may be requested for an interview, at the discretion of the committee.
All members of a bench staff (head coach, assistant, trainer, and manager) must be approved by the SLMHA executive.
